Proximity gets sustainable
For the second year in a row, Proximity London has been actively supporting social change in developing countries. This time we sent one of our best and brightest Account Directors – Ewa Kwolek – out to help Projecto Edificio Ecologico, a sustainable NGO in Recife, north-eastern Brazil. Ewa’s trip was arranged by The International Exchange (TIE) – the social enterprise that links UK-based communications professionals with NGOs in developing countries.
Before Ewa could head off, she needed to raise at least £1,000 to put towards her work. Hence her “Go Green” campaign which saw agency colleagues encouraged to turn off lights and PCs, take the stairs ahead of the lift, print double-sided and more. Ewa even staged a skills auction, as part of her Green Party night. Together with friends and family, and with a little friendly backing from Proximity, Ewa amassed over £3,200.
Out in Brazil Ewa swung into action, putting her skills and energy at the disposal of local agency Arcos Comunicacao, by helping them devise and execute a campaign to encourage local businesses to recycle more. Segregating their waste would not only help the environment – but also help the garbage pickers (catadores) who make a living by selling recyclable materials. Ewa accomplished a great deal – and all of it in Portuguese – during her month-long assignment – and has been busy invigorating her London colleagues into greater greeness ever since she got back.
